Phase 1 [week 1]:
Individual Services Training and Selection Sessions, during which all participants undergo a rigorous training conducted from a beginner to advanced levels. The services might organise 'training' races, and often choose to compete with each other to 'size up' the competition, with the racing results used for selection of the service team and for determination of the 'order' of race line-up [your bib number]. There are no 'left out extras' in our sport. All participants are either competing or helping out the race organisers with recording the results, counting penalty loops and anything else as required.

Two races normally held in the first week are:
  • 5/7.5 km Classical race
  • 7.5km Biathlon Sprint.

    Phase 2 [week 2]:
The National Interservice Competition, which is held during the second week and normally involves five race events consisting of:

  • Australian Biathlon Association (ABA) Biathlon sprint
  • ADF Biathlon event
  • Military Patrol (military activities combined with Biathlon in a team environment)
  • Relay race (normally short distance with multiple teams)
  • Classical race (alternating long/short distance with freestyle each year).

All the competitions are conducted on 2 levels: 'Novices' (for those participating the first two times in the sport) and 'Seniors' (from the 3rd year onwards).
Phase 2 also includes various fun events e.g. 'cooks races', local school visit [where ADF biathletes share their laser rifles and experience with the local kids], group sauna sessions and a few compulsory dining/ drinking group hugs.
